Equipment

  • Oven
  • Mixing bowl
  • baking sheet
  • Aluminum foil
  • Saucepan
  • Resealable Plastic Bag

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Whisk until well-blended.
  3. Place the chicken thighs into a resealable plastic bag, pour half the prepared marinade over them, seal the bag tightly, and massage the marinade into the meat. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight.
  4. Let the chicken rest at room temperature for about 30 minutes before cooking.
  5. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and arrange the marinated chicken thighs on it, spaced out for even cooking.
  6. Bake the chicken in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and the juices run clear.
  7. While the chicken is baking, pour the reserved marinade into a small saucepan and simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  8. After the chicken is cooked, brush the thickened marinade over it and broil for 2-3 minutes for a charred finish.
  9. Allow the chicken to rest for a few minutes before slicing.
  10. Slice the Char Siu Chicken and serve hot with steamed jasmine rice and stir-fried vegetables.
