Preparation Steps
  1. In a large bowl, combine dark brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour, mixing well with a whisk. Cut in softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and set aside.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare an 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking pan.
  3. Cream together softened butter and dark brown sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add one egg, one egg yolk, warmed whole milk, and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture and blend until just combined.
  5. Sift in flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gently stir until just combined; do not overmix!
  6. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan, sprinkle with brown sugar, and then pour the remaining batter on top.
  7. Distribute the prepared streusel mixture evenly over the top of the batter.
  8. Bake for 40-50 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
