Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour Whole wheat flour can be used but may require more liquid.
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar Brown sugar can be used for a deeper flavor.
  • 2 teaspoons Active dry yeast Ensure it's fresh for best results.
  • 1 cup Milk Almond milk is a great dairy-free alternative.
  • 1/2 cup Butter Substitute with coconut oil for a dairy-free version.
  • 1 large Egg A flax egg works as a vegan substitute.
  • 2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon Essential for classic cinnamon roll flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Balances sweetness and enhances flavor.
For the Icing
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar Use a sugar alternative for a lower-calorie option.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Almond extract can be used as a substitute.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and granulated sugar, then sprinkle the active dry yeast over the surface. Let it activate for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt. Melt the butter and mix it with the activated yeast, followed by the egg. Pour this into the flour mixture, and knead until smooth, approximately 8-10 minutes, before letting rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  3. Prepare the filling by mixing softened butter, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon in a medium bowl until smooth and spreadable.
  4. Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently, roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle, about ¼ inch thick, then spread the cinnamon filling evenly across it.
  5. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log into 2-inch pieces and shape each into a heart.
  6. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cover with a towel, allowing them to puff up for 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while they rise.
  7. Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Prepare the icing by whisking together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a splash of milk until smooth. Drizzle over warm rolls.
