Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt. Once yeast mixture is foamy, pour it into the flour mixture and stir until dough forms.
  3. Transfer dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm area for about 1 hour.
  5. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a 24-inch rope and twist into pretzel shape.
  6. In a large pot, bring water to a gentle boil. Carefully add baking soda to dissolve.
  7. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds on each side, then remove and place on baking sheet.
  8. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Whisk together egg yolk and water for egg wash, then brush on each pretzel and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  9. Bake pretzels for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
